Tyler Downie
Head Instructor & Founder
With a decade of dedicated training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and several years of coaching experience, Tyler brings both technical expertise and a passion for teaching to Shield Grappling Center. As a Purple Belt under the renowned Fabio Lima, Tyler combines traditional BJJ wisdom with modern, evidence-based training methodologies.
Tyler's mission is to revolutionize BJJ training in Michigan by integrating scientific principles with values that build character. His approach emphasizes not only technical proficiency but also personal development, creating an environment where practitioners can grow both as martial artists and as individuals.
"My goal is to build a community where the principles learned on the mats—discipline, perseverance, humility, and respect—extend far beyond the gym and into every aspect of life."
